Can the column shoes be the electrical conductor and part of the lightning protection system?

PFEIFER PCC column shoes, like any reinforcement elements in a column (or beam), can fulfill an additional function – an electrical conductor, while ensuring the continuity of the electrical circuit. The specific surface area of the bars in the PFEIFER PCC column shoe system is sufficient for this purpose. This means that the main column bars (vertical), designated for electrical conduction, should be connected by welding to the anchor bars in the column shoe, foundation anchor or connecting anchor. A fillet weld on both sided should be sufficient with a = 4 mm and a total length 90 mm. This task in precast elements and monolithic concrete is often carried out using special earthing bridges (PFEIFER BEB elements in our company). These earthing bridges are also successfully used to capture the stray voltages. This system is autonomous (i.e. it uses main structural reinforcement of the elements and also  allows to conduct electricity in the places of connection the prefabricated elements under the assumption of the bridge circuit). An example of the solution that can be used - see Annex No. 22
